ES should be included in design decisions

Surface specification and other design issues could benefit from environmental services input


Environmental services professionals should get more involved in the design and surface specification process during construction projects, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.

ES professionals need to assert themselves as experts and the knowledgeable keepers of the environment, the article said.

According to blogger Bob Paine, director of operations at Acuity Concepts Inc., they need to become experts on surface types, standards, product-life expectancies, how the buildings will be maintained and at what cost.

"All ES professionals can think of examples such as 'the building was turned over to us and that is when we found out there were no janitors' closets,'" the article said.
