Hospital security departments can help protect domestic violence victims

75 percent of domestic violence victims are targeted at work


In an article on the Campus Safety website, James Sawyer, director of security at Seattle Children’s Hospital as well as president of the Washington State Crime Prevention Assn., described some of the steps that hospitals can take to assist and protect their employees who are victims of domestic or dating violence.

The first thing is have a domestic violence support policy. The policy should be emphasized to current and new employees.

A facility can also can assist an employee with an emergency housing as well as telling them how to get a no-contact order, a restraining order, an anti-harassment order.

A facility can also help by changing a potential victim's schedule and mode of transportation — providing them with taxi vouchers, bus vouchers or parking lot escorts.
