Infection preventionists' holiday wish list

System that encourages staff to wash their hands is on the list

According to an article on the Contagion Live website, a system that encourages staff to wash their hands on the list in high on an infection preventionist's wish list.

Topping the list is people who stay home when they are sick. If a healthcare worker comes to work sick, it puts patients and staff alike at risk.

Hand hygiene compliance is also on the list. It is one of the most effective and easy ways to prevent the spread of infection and yet compliance in the United States is abysmal.

Reminder and monitoring systems are expensive and staff often feel as if they have Big Brother watching them, the article said. An effective (and less threatening) system to catch healthcare workers prior to entering or exiting a patient’s room that also reports compliance to infection control/quality enhancement programs is on every IPs list.
