Alarm system fails in U.K. hospital fire

Patients and staff were evacuated from Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary following a fire as an alarm system failed

Patients and staff were evacuated from Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary following a fire as an alarm system failed, according to an article on the News & Star website.

The fire occurred just days after serious concerns regarding fire safety at the hospital were raised, including an inadequate fire alarm system.

“At the time of the fire, upgrade work was being carried out on the fire alarm system which led to a failure on some of our manual call points," a hospital official said.

A spokesman for Health Management Carlisle said the incident was caused by a worker, employed by a sub-contractor, who failed to follow proper procedures during maintenance work on the system.
