Art initiative makes children's healthcare facilities less scary

RxArt commissions artists to create artworks on walls, ceilings, floors - even medical equipment

RxArt commissions artists to create artworks on walls, ceilings, floors and even medical equipment in pediatrics wards across the country, to make the facilities less intimidating, according to an article on The Olympian website.

The nonprofit has brought artists to pediatric wards across the country. Former art dealer Diane Brown founded RxArt 15 years ago out of her own claustrophobia of CAT scan machines.

RxArt has worked with such artists as Jeff Koons at Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois; Kenny Scharf at Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn; Urs Fischer at the Cedar-Sinai Maxine Dunitz Children's Health Center in Los Angeles; and John Monti at Children's Hospital Boston.

"A positive and comforting environment can have a major impact on patients' experiences," Dr. Barry Coller, physician-in-chief at Rockefeller University Hospital, said in the article. "This is especially true for pediatric patients who are a particularly vulnerable population."
