BYOD security vital for healthcare companies

Facilities should consider segmenting their network to isolate the electronic health record system

By Healthcare Facilities Today

Now that the volumes of data circulating online are rising rapidly across the world, security is becoming increasingly important. With personal devices becoming more popular for businesses, healthcare facilities must now take a look at their approach to network security, according to an article on the Kroll Ontrack website.

To help businesses, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has outlined guidance on how to keep networks secure, the article said. The HRSA advised organizations to consider segmenting their network to isolate the electronic health record system, removing connecting between the EHR and other systems whose users do not need access to it.

Issuing strict data privileges is another way of ensuring information is only delivered to the right individuals, the article said. By making highly sensitive data only available to senior staff, it is less likely for the details to fall into the wrong hands.

Simple measures such as installing an anti-virus on each system is another way of protecting computers from cyber threats, as regular scans will be able to identify harmful viruses that could otherwise go unnoticed, according to the article.
