Building information modeling can promote safety and green design

BIM has emerged as a popular tool for design, development and efficient construction of complex buildings

Building information modeling (BIM) has emerged as at popular tool for design, development and efficient construction of complex buildings, according to an article on the Archinect website.

For building healthcare facilities, where in addition to cost saving and scheduling, it is also important to ensure that facility management becomes easy and higher levels of safety are implemented, BIM is a perfect fit, the article said.

Hospitals house diagnostic, therapeutic and life-support medical equipment that can be placed into the BIM to document the equipment location after the building is occupied. Healthcare facilities also use a lot of energy resources and generate a lot of waste. Using BIM, it is possible to develop a greener healthcare and make waste management highly efficient.

An early 2014 survey found that nearly 96 percent of the 85 respondents used BIM and 74 percent of those BIM users had been involved in healthcare facility construction projects.
