CMMS success rests on having a plan, goals

Before installing a computerized maintenance management system, a facility needs a comprehensive view of how the system will function


Before installing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), identify the maintenance goals and workflow processes that need to be automated, according to an article on the FacilityCare website.

Once a plan is in place, a facility can focus on setup and follow-up.

Setting up a CMMS takes teamwork to identify the goals, objectives and expectations. A facility needs a comprehensive view of how the system will function. Managers also need the capacity to configure the CMMS to match the workflow of their facilities and add unique information for assets when necessary, the article said.

Once the CMMS is set up, the follow-up phase needs a point person to champion the system, but the maintenance team should share responsibility for implementation so information does not get bottled up. CMMS providers often offer consultation services throughout this phase to configure features to match the needs of the facility.
