CMS to investigate University of Maryland hospital after patient dumping

A video of a woman discharged in her hospital gown went viral on Facebook

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has authorized an investigation into University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus over potential violations of federal regulatory requirements after a video of a woman discharged in her hospital gown went viral on Facebook, according to an article on the NPR website.

CMS initiated the investigation after hearing about the incident through media coverage.

The spokesperson did not specify what regulatory requirements are under investigation, or what kind of penalties UMMC might face.

The video shows security guards walking away from a downtown bus stop next to the hospital. The patient, Imamu Baraka, in a hospital gown and socks is nearby with several bags filled with her belongings.
