California town rejects hospital sign request

Caltrans denies Bear Valley Community Healthcare District's request for additional signs

By Healthcare Facilities Today

Caltrans, Calif., has denied Bear Valley Community Healthcare District's request for additional signage, according to an article on the Big Bear Grizzly website.

There are already signs within Big Bear Valley, but many are obscured by trees or other obstacles, the article said.

Based on the California Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, no new hospital signs will be approved because the existing signs meet or exceed its standards, city officials said in the article.

Big Bear Lake officials say they will try to help the situation by removing the hospital from the standard wayfinding sign placement and putting a separate band with more recognizable coloration to direct motorists to the healthcare facility.

Hospital signs that are obstructed on state highways will also be addressed, the article said.
