Cancer center includes 'quiet room'

Comprehensive Care Center within Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., has a space for contemplation

Architects designed the Comprehensive Care Center within Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., with a "quiet room" for contemplation, according to an article on the Contract magazine website.

Visitors can enter the quiet room from either end of a curved translucent screen wall that shields the space. The circular plan of the room is further articulated by concentric layers that create three spaces within one, the article said.

The leaf-like patterns created by wood canopies and the texture of the uneven mosaic-tile floor reference elements found in nature.

The space has a glass fountain as a focal point. The fountain is lit with programmable lighting that changes color and intensity to set the tone.
