Case study: High-abuse light fixtures maintain behavioral health campus safety

Trillium Family Services, which provides behavioral health services, was having a problem maintaining safety levels due to broken light fixtures. A solution was found in Kenall Lighting's high-abuse fluorescent and LED luminaires.

Trillium Family Services, which provides behavioral health services, was having a problem maintaining safety levels due to broken light fixtures at its two campuses in western Oregon: the Parry Center for Children in southeast Portland and the Children's Farm Home in Corvallis.

Broken light fixtures were an issue at least once a week.  During some weeks, almost every day there would be an incident involving the light fixtures. In addition, at its Edwards School in Portland, the gym’s hanging fixtures prevented the children from participating in recreational activities indoors due to the potential for breakage when balls crash into the light fixtures.

Trillium wanted a lighting system that would offer higher light levels than the previous, older technology while at the same time significantly reducing maintenance and energy costs. After an analysis of the schools' needs, the maintenance team selected high-abuse fluorescent and LED luminaires from Kenall Lighting for their durability, long life and energy savings.

Over 100 high-abuse fluorescent and LED luminaires were installed in the residential units of both the Parry Center and Children’s Farm Home campuses.  The luminaires are installed in all of the unit living rooms, hallways, family rooms/visiting rooms, staff offices, bathrooms and bedrooms. New exterior lights were installed in the entrance courtyard adjacent to the Children’s Farm Family Center and the loading dock.  An additional 20 luminaires are anticipated being retrofit in the gym at Edwards School.

Since the installation, the school hasn’t had one maintenance call for the lights, the manufacturer says.
