Cleveland Clinic moving toward carbon-neutrality

Health system planning renewable energy purchases, continued energy efficiency

Cleveland Clinic has set a goal of becoming carbon neutral in 10 years, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.

Cleveland Clinic's sustainability efforts have already included energy and water-reducing strategies, energy-efficient facility design, environmentally friendly purchasing and an aggressive recycling program.

In 10 years, the system has saved an estimated $50 million in energy costs and $30 million in materials purchased, diverted more than 100,000 tons of material from landfills and saved more than 600,000 trees, the article said.

The health system plans to accomplish its new goal by continuing these efforts and by purchasing renewable energy such as wind and solar from the power grid.
