CoxHealth holds topping out ceremony for the Cox Medical Center South Patient Tower project

CoxHealth and CBRE Healthcare are pleased to announce the topping out of the new Cox Medical Center South patient tower.

The $130 million, 310,000 square foot expansion is currently underway on the Cox South campus and is the final major expansion to take place on the campus. The expansion is a testament to CoxHealth’s vision to maintain the growing patient population and to look toward the future of healthcare.

“We know that to continue to provide the absolute best patient care and meet the needs of our growing and aging population, we must have facilities designed for the highest standards of care and efficiency,” CEO Steve Edwards says. “This new patient tower places us securely at the forefront of health care in the Midwest.”

The new tower will improve the care that CoxHealth offers in a multitude of ways. First, the expansion will offer all private patient rooms. This private bed model will offer therapeutic benefits for patients and ultimately improve healing outcomes. The new private room model will also increase efficiency, allowing for a better use of space, better throughput and a better patient experience. The new tower will also allow for the expansion of care offered by CoxHealth, with the addition of the Dee Ann White Women’s and Children’s Hospital on the lower floors of the new patient tower and the Jared Neurosciences Center – housing both inpatient and outpatient services – on the upper levels.

“Our neuroscience and women’s and children’s teams are an absolute strength of this organization. We deliver more than 3,000 babies a year, and our neuroscience team has been rated number one in the nation for spinal fusion by CareChex,” Edwards says. “We want to complement first-rate care with first-rate facilities, and this expansion allows us to do that.”

CoxHealth broke ground on the nine-floor patient tower on May 15, 2013.

Despite one of the harshest winters in Missouri history, the project remains on schedule, with an anticipated opening in May 2015.

“CBRE Healthcare is honored to have been selected to partner with CoxHealth on this expansion project,” stated Steve Higgs, Managing Director for CBRE. “CoxHealth has a mission to improve the health of the surrounding communities through quality health care, education and research; this project is a testament to that mission.”
