Decoding healthcare facility door locking requirements

Designing compliant locking arrangements can be a challenge

Designing code-compliant locking arrangements that meet a healthcare facility's security needs can be a challenge according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.

The good news is that the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101, Life Safety Code (LSC), and International Building Code (IBC) are more closely aligned than ever.

Facility professionals should review the LSC and IBC code references for each locking method prior to designing new and/or reviewing existing locking arrangements as the requirements detailed are a summary of the code requirements, the article said.

Understanding the security goal is key. Meeting with the security staff is crucial to discuss the needed level of safety.
