The 2013 Healthcare Environment Awards, co-sponsored by Contract magazine, in association with The Center for Health Design, Healthcare Design 2013, and the Vendome Group. Each year, projects are recognized in acute care, ambulatory care, health and fitness, conceptual and student design categories.

The Bayhealth Medical Center Kent Campus Expansion, Phase 2 Pavilion won an honorable mention in the ambulatory category.

Part of the Dover, Dela., Bayhealth Medical Center, expansion contains an emergency department and oncology center, supported by a helipad, conference center, central sterile department, compounding pharmacy, security department, loading dock, central plant, and 360-space parking garage, according to an article in Contact magazine.

Connecting the pavilion to the existing hospital, a new welcome center and lobby are lit by skylights. Within the double-height space,
a wave-like stair serves as a focal point, and a wood-clad canopy and wall surfaces add warmth. Most surfaces in the lobby and throughout the pavilion are white, but there a few colorful exceptions, according to the article

One juror found the interiors “uplifting,” and another commented that it is “refreshing in terms of a new way of thinking abouthealthcare interiors,” the article said.
