Interior designers share some best practices learned while developing an art program for a major medical center.

Designers from interior planning firm Spellman Brady & Co. of St. Louis, Mo., share some best practices they learned while developing an art program for the new Springfield Regional Medical Center in Springfield, Ohio.

In a Healthcare Design magazine article, the interior designers discuss some of the challenges they faced while creating an art program for the 475,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2011.

One of the challenges they faced, according to the article, was being hired after the design phase, so the art program had to fit with the existing building design. This meant making sure the art installations aligned with the physical space — that they didn’t interfere with functions like HVAC airflow or safety features like the sprinkler system.
