Don't overdo medical waste disposal at healthcare facilities

If staff knows what medical waste actually is, a skilled nursing facility can save time and money


If a skilled nursing facility's staff members are educated about what medical waste actually is, they can save a lot of time and money, according to an article on the McKnight's Long-Term Care News website.

Skilled nursing facilities are considered small- to medium-sized medical waste generators, but are fully subject to the growing body of regulations. 

Medical waste must be managed in accordance with requirements established by federal, state and local governing bodies. 

The regulation may tempt staff to overdo it. They might deposit everything — gowns, gloves, non-bloody dressings — into the red bag due to an overabundance of caution.
