By Healthcare Facilities Today

Environmental services associate Jean Azor, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and Cancer Institute in Tampa, Fla., won the 2013 Heart of Healthcare Award, given by Association for the Healthcare Environment (AHE) Kimberly-Clark Professional. The award was given at this fall's AWE conference in Indianapolis.

The award recognizes frontline ES technicians who make a difference for patients. According to the article on the Health Facilities Management magazine website, Azor earned the honor for his incredible dedication to his work to provide a clean and safe environment, but also because of how he befriended a young boy undergoing chemotherapy treatments at the hospital.

According to the article, the boy had become interested in the floor scrubber machine that Azor used. The boy’s parents asked if he could show the boy the machine. Azor did and befriended the boy, a relationship that lasted through months of treatment and even after the boy’s care at the institution had ended.
