Establishing healthcare disinfection programs

One tactic for improving the cleanliness of surfaces, is to use the right disinfectants

When establishing healthcare disinfection programs, one tactic for improving the cleanliness of surfaces, is to use the right disinfectants, according to an article on the Facility Executive website.

Pathogens, such as norovirus and rhinovirus, may not be killed by dilutable quat disinfectants. Contact times should be realistic so that pathogens on surfaces can be killed before the surface dries. Disinfectants with long contact times may require reapplication to ensure pathogens are killed, the article said.

More cleaning is taking place while patients are present so processes must be completed safely and efficiently, so as not to create an unpleasant environment.

Disinfectants with formulations that include chlorine and/or quat based ingredients are being replaced by products that incorporate alternative formulations.
