'Floating hospital' has been treating patients for 150 years

The New York facility is still operational, but no longer on the water


New York's Floating Hospital now treats the poor through two landlocked healthcare facilities, according to a "Throwback Thursday" article on Hospitals & Health Networks website.

The floating hospital aspect of the Floating Hospital was discontinued after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, but 2016 this year marks the 150th anniversary of when a summer cruise program for underprivileged children was launched. 

The cruise evolved into a permanent healthcare program and the Floating Hospital.

The Floating Hospital moved to dry land after 9/11. In 2009, the first Floating Hospital Community Health Center welcomed patients.
