After being damaged by a tornado, St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., turned to modular construction to rebuild. It was up and running less than a year later, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.
The 150,000-square-foot, two-story hospital was designed and built in eight and a half months, the article said. It is made of 224 structural steel components built in a California factory and shipped to Missouri. The modular units were under construction as the Joplin site was cleared and foundations and underground utilities were installed.
More healthcare facilities are turning to modular construction, the article said.
"It's definitely here to stay," said Chip Cogswell, national health care director, Turner Construction Co. "Anybody who's not doing it isn't paying attention."
