Hawaii Community Foundation Awards FLEX Grant to Lāna’i Community Health Center, a High-Performing Non-Profit

The Lāna’i Community Health Center (LCHC) was awarded a grant by the Hawaii Community Foundation through its FLEX Grants Program, a program intended to award flexible support to high-performing organizations. This marks the fourth consecutive year that LCHC has received the FLEX Grant.

The Hawaii Community Foundation supports organizations, such as LCHC, which help people make a difference, inspiring the spirit of giving and investing in people and solutions to benefit every Hawaiian island community. LCHC successfully demonstrated exemplary performance as a non-profit organization by being connected to their community, implementing effective programs and services, being accountable and achieving critical results, continuing to network with other organizations, having great governance and leadership, and showing healthy finances.

Since its incorporation in 2004, LCHC has been focused on serving the culturally diverse rural community of Lāna’i where 29% of the population is living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. By directly providing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual welfare to their patients, they help build healthy families in a supportive environment, turning away no one due to inability to pay.

Understanding the needs of the island (such as lack of access to affordable medical and dental care, unavailable mammogram services, and minimal behavioral health services), as well as identifying cultural and socio-economic barriers to accessing quality healthcare, LCHC has taken remarkable steps in its commitment to providing overall wellness to the people of Lāna’i. Some of the notable programs implemented by LCHC include integrated team care approach, promotion of patient-centered care, free fitness programs for youth and adults, school education, and use of telehealth technology.

“We are deeply grateful to the Hawaii Community Foundation for recognizing our dedication to meet the healthcare needs of our Lāna’i community,” said Diana Shaw, executive director of LCHC. “This grant goes a long way in helping us successfully carry out our mission.”
