Healthcare Design magazine recently named the winners of the second annual 'The HCD 10' competition. According to the magazine, the awards honor "an elite group of design and architecture professionals who represent the most exciting, inspirational, and influential healthcare work of the previous year."
Nominated by their peers, the winners were selected by the magazine editors from dozens of submissions in 10 categories.
David Ruthven was honored in the Rising Star (under 40) category
Ruthven, co-lead and creative director, NXT Health, first found the spotlight when he worked on a first generation patient room prototype as a graduate student in the Clemson University Architecture + Health program.
Following graduation, he joined SmithGroupJJR in San Francisco. He later began collaborating with nonprofit NXT Health on the design of a futuristic, technologically advanced inpatient environment. In 2011, he joined the organization full-time.
In July 2013, Patient Room 2020 was unveiled. The 400-square-foot next-generation inpatient room prototype showcased a design that strives to improve the healthcare experience by providing new opportunities for patient and family engagement, improving infection control, and optimizing caregiver performance.
