The University of Maryland Medical System is exploring a mixed-use hospital project, according to an article on the Costar website.
In the current healthcare building boom, developers across the country are adding apartments, retail space and hotels to patient care facilities.
The retail strategy for these healthcare systems on mixed-use facilities is a result of their realization that they need to go where the patients live, work and shop in order to compete effectively with other hospital systems, said according to a real estate professional.
In other cases, the hospital is merging with existing malls and shopping centers.
