Healthcare facilities cultivating wellness with gardens

California healthcare facility cafe, garden helps feed the community

The café at Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata, Calif., feeds patients, hospital employees and members of the community every day, according to an article on the Eureka Times-Standard website.

The café selections and a farmers market are two examples of an integrated effort by Humboldt County healthcare and social service programs to improve the community's access to affordable fruits and vegetables by expanding thriving garden programs.

The Mad River garden began eight years ago when the hospital decided to grow its own greens.

The organic garden is now a 2-acre farm with 4,000 square feet of greenhouse. It yields up to 80 percent of the hospital’s produce needs for in-patient and adult day care meals, department catering, and the café.
