Healthcare facility design is moving away from the "production line" of caring for patients to models that focus on a homelike, holistic approach, according to an article on the FacilityCare website.

Assisted care and skilled care facilities are on the cutting edge of this trend.

Assisted care facilities started evolving about 15 years ago. Modern residential facilities began looking and functioning like a home. Research drove this design and showed that when you have bedrooms clustered around a great room and open kitchen, for example, elderly patients’ mobility increases.

Architects are looking toward the hospitality sector for ideas. The “boutique” or small hotel style is the newest trend, the article said.
