Hospital managers say culture change key to better hand hygiene

Survey found that refreshing and renewing the message, actionable audit results and empowering patients were key themes


A recent survey of hospital managers found that a top-down culture change, refreshing and renewing the message, actionable audit results and empowering patients were key themes in improving hand hygiene, according to an article on the Infection Control Today website.

Other themes that emerged from the survey: connecting the five moments to the whole patient journey and reconceptualizing non-compliance and using the hammer.

The researchers found that strategies based on the five moments of hand hygiene should be tailored to specific roles and settings and take into account the whole patient journey including patient interactions with clinical and non-clinical staff, the article said. 

Strategies that included a disciplinary component should be considered.
