Hospital parking changes raise safety concerns

Parking to be banned on streets around facility

A nurses’ association said new parking restrictions around the Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide, Australia, could put staff, patients and visitors at risk if they chose not to pay to leave their cars on the hospital grounds, according to an article on the Adelaide Now website.

Motorists will be banned from parking on all or part of selected streets within a 500-meter radius of the hospital.

The association plans to discuss the matter with the hospital and its members to determine whether extra safety measures were needed, such as security guards, to walk staff to their vehicles.

Nurses have also raised concerns about city parking restrictions increasing their risk of assault.

Government officials said there was ample parking available in the multi-level parking lot on the hospital grounds. The government-managed lot has a daily rate of $13, with fees starting at $2.50 for the first hour. Hospital staff receive a discount and exemptions are available to volunteers and people who attend the hospital frequently.
