Hospital reaches zero-infection target

CEO calls transparency, inspections and a targeted goal keys to success

By Healthcare Facilities Today

In a blog on the Becker's Hospital Review website, John Calderone, CEO of Olympia Medical Center in Los Angeles, discussed how his hospital reached a zero-infection target.

After hearing some unsettling numbers on the Olympia Medical Center's hospital-acquired infection (HAI)  rate, the hospital put together a plan to change them. According to Calderone, after implementing their plan, they hit their goal of zero HAIs in six months. Some of the lessons learned on the road to zero infections included:

• Don't expect — inspect

• Transparency can be frightening, but it should also be embraced

•  Having a targeted mission can build a sense of community

• Educate the staff; do not hide the problem

•  Improvement in one area can cause waves of improvement in other areas
