Hospital told to improve infection control after C. diff outbreak

Staff at the Scottish facility have been ordered to wear the correct gloves and prioritize the appropriate disposal of waste

Staff at the Vale of Leven Hospital in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, have been ordered to wear the correct gloves and prioritize the appropriate disposal of waste by the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI), according to an article on the Herald Scotland website.

Inspectors found some staff were unsure of the correct way to clean up blood spillages and also found evidence of poor waste disposal on three wards, with clinical waste being put in a domestic bin, the article said.

A recent inspection found evidence that Vale of Leven Hospital is working to comply with the majority of standards to protect patients, staff and visitors from acquiring an infection, according to HEI chief inspector Susan Brimelow.

She called for improvements within a month for staff compliance with current policy guidelines on gloves selection and usage.

The inspectorate also wants standard infection control precautions to be applied for waste management and disposal within that time period, the article said.
