How important is hospital security?

Tips and tricks to better protect healthcare institutions

By Healthcare Facilities Today

Hospitals are — and should be — thought of as safe place, when a crime is committed in the hospital or other health care facility it's of particular concern, according to an article posted on the Healthcare Global web site.

Especially in urban areas where violence is a leading cause of death or injury, some hospital staff have changed how they secure the facility.

The article refers to an incident in Buffalo, N.Y., where a surgeon shot and killed his ex-girlfriend (a nurse) in the Erie County Medical Center. The doctor was later killed himself near his home. This incident was in June, 2012: security has since increased and measures, such as the metal detection, has also increased. The area around this hospital is known for gang violence; several years before this incident a gang shooting took place in the facility's emergency department.

Staff involvement and safety equipment are recommended for increased security.
