Illinois hospital project hits roadblock

Refusal of expansion plan hurts proposed Franciscan St. James Health restructuring


The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board said that no more beds were needed at an Olympia Fields hospital after Franciscan St. James Health's submitted a restructuring plan, according to an article on the Chicago Tribune website.

Franciscan St. James wants to close a hospital in Chicago Heights and relocate services to its Olympia Fields hospital, which is about 5 miles away. 

To accommodate patients who have been served in Chicago Heights, Franciscan St. James wants to add 56 beds to the Olympia Fields facility at a cost of $114.6 million.

The review board said that even with the closing of the Chicago Heights hospital, the south and southwest suburbs would have too many hospital beds.
