Many facility managers are challenged with integrating an old facility — including its fire alarm/life safety system —  with new additions while keeping the original facility operational, according to an article on the FacilityCare website.

Several questions should be considered during the design phase of the integration project, including:

• How will the curent codes differ from those enforced when the building was commissioned?

• Can the fire alarm and life safety system be upgraded or extended?

•Does the safety system interface with systems such as elevator recall, smoke control and security?
