The Joint Commission has issued Sentinel Event Alert 55, which addresses preventing falls and fall-related injuries in healthcare facilities.
The alert's recommendations include establishing an interdisciplinary falls injury prevention team or evaluating the membership of the current team to assure organizational infrastructure and capacity to reduce injury risk from falls.
The team should include nursing, physicians, environmental services, information technology, patient advocacy, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, quality and risk management staff.
