Healthcare data-breach prevention should adopt techniques from the banking industry, according to an article on the Health IT Security website.
Understanding the motivation behind healthcare data breaches, how the data is monetized, and using federal law enforcement agencies can help prevent future attacks, according to Brookings Institution’s Center for Technology Innovation Fellow Niam Yaraghia.
The banking industry has adopted several successful methods to fight data breaches.
“Immediately after the breach of credit card data, all affected consumers are notified, their old credit cards are frozen and new ones are issued,” Yaraghia said.
In contrast, the healthcare industry panics, has mandatory reporting, and identity theft protection services are only used in some cases, the article said.
