London STD clinic designed to overcome stigma

Facility has a boutique-like, inviting atmosphere defying preconceptions

London's Dean Street Express provides speedy sexually transmitted disease testing in a boutique-like, inviting atmosphere that defies any stigma or preconceptions, according to an article in Contract magazine.

“We told (the architects) we wanted something that looked completely different from any other health clinic,” Dr. Alan McOwan said. “Funding is getting tighter, so we had to adapt, but it’s certainly a radical statement.”

A lacy pattern masks the glazed street facade but reveals movement beyond.

“The doctors wanted someone walking past to catch a glimmer of what is happening and feel tempted to go inside — like an impulse shopper,” PENSON lead architect, Andrew Tapsell, said. “It encourages people to get a check-up while taking their minds off where they are.”

The Corian-and-laminate reception desk echoes the sensuous curves of the walls, drawing people into the confined space. In contrast, the screening rooms are identified by their vibrant colors and patterns, which evoke tropical gardens, the article said.
