Long Island High school opens health center

Longwood High School facility offers free access to healthcare


To provide Longwood High School students with free access to health professionals, the Longwood School District has established a state-funded School Based Health Center (SBHC), according to an article on the Long Island.com website.

The center will be staffed by third-year residents, one nurse practitioner and a medical assistant under the supervision of an attending physician at Stony Brook University Hospital. 

Because the health center is located on campus, students will spend less time out of school when they need medical attention; if a student is not feeling well while in school, they can receive appropriate medical care, the article said.

The SBHC staff will be able to provide services that school nurses are prohibited from providing, including diagnosis and doctor referral. 

Only students with parental consent and completed permission forms will be seen. There is no charge to children or their families for care provided at the center. 

The SBHC was part of the original design of Longwood High School back in the early 1980s.
