In healthcare facility construction projects, dust and debris can be a major source of molds and fungi spores, according to an article on the FacilityCare website.

Education and training are essential to maintain infection control policies during construction projects.

The Joint Commission requires hospitals to conduct an infection control risk assessment as part of its Environment of Care standards designed to identify potential hazards to patients due to construction, the article said. 

This assessment is the foundation for an infection control plan and policies, jointly developed by facility managers and construction contractors. 

Construction companies then should have overlapping processes to create multiple steps to remove potential hazardous material and prevent spreading it in the hospital.
