Maryland hospitals' hand-hygiene compliance rises

State reaches an average of 87 percent compliance at 44 of its acute-care hospitals and one of its specialty hospitals in 2013, up from 81 percent two years ago

According to statistics from the Maryland Hospital Association, the state's hospitals reached an average of 87 percent compliance at 44 of its acute-care hospitals and one of its specialty hospitals in 2013, up from 81 percent two years ago.

The association released that statistic as part of a report detailing what hospitals have been doing to reduce their infection and readmission rates, according to an article on the Washington Business Journal's website.

These measurements are increasingly important for Maryland, which agreed to meet a goal of a 30 percent drop in hospital-acquired infections in the next five years to keep a waiver with the federal government to set its own rates for hospital services, the article said.
