McCarthy completes TI design-build for Sharp Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center

SAN DIEGO – McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., one of the nation’s leading healthcare builders, has finished a complete design-build renovation of the Sharp Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center, an existing 14,172-square-foot, single-level facility located at 2999 Health Center Drive in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego.

McCarthy and Cuningham Group Architecture, Inc., collaborated as the design-build team to complete this $6,400,000 project, with Sharp Healthcare project managers Naz Fouladi and Tim Crowe providing project oversight.

The Sharp Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center provides a comprehensive range of rehabilitation services for patients who have suffered catastrophic strokes; brain and spinal cord injuries; neurological issues, sprains, strains and other injuries; and problems related to balance, speech, lymph edema and chronic pain.  The center provides the most accredited program of its kind in San Diego County.

The renovation transformed the inpatient wing of the Sharp Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center into a modern healing environment, with more private rooms that provide en-suit bathrooms and showers, updated administrative areas and hallways, and expanded outdoor therapy gardens.

The design of the remodeled space features red oak laminate flooring, cherry-wood laminate doors, large format granite-patterned porcelain tile in the en suite baths, soothing earth tone paint colors, chair railings and wall guards that run the length of the hallways, and red oak and maple wood administration desks with white laminate counters.  Artwork depicting nature and hand-blown glass wall ornaments grace the hallways. A large-format screen at the main administration desk enables staff to monitor patients’ therapy schedules.

KPFF Consulting Engineers served as the structural engineer; Gould Electric, Inc., was the design-build electrical subcontractor and teamed with Sparling as the electrical engineer; A.O. Reed & Company was the design-build plumbing and mechanical subcontractor and teamed with Dufoe Consulting Engineers as the plumbing and mechanical engineer; A&D Fire Protection was the design-build fire sprinkler subcontractor; and Marum Partnership Landscape Architecture was the landscape architect.
