Across Alberta, Canada, $637 million has been deferred in maintenance costs at healthcare facilities, according to article on Fort McMurray Today website.
“Trying to provide care in deteriorating and dilapidated facilities puts severe strain on the health system, the workforce, and ultimately endangers patient safety,” Alberta Liberal Opposition spokesperson, David Swann, said.
“There is also the added burden of delaying or cancelling procedures, which cost more in terms of lost productivity and increased human suffering.”
According to the Alberta Minister of Infrastructure, the deferred costs in this report only make up 3 percent of the total value of health facilities in Alberta.
Also, some of the deferred maintenance costs include spending planned for future maintenance, the article said.
