NIST issues guidance for protecting medical IoT devices

The publication covers how to secure against a variety of cyberattacks

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), working with the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE),  has issued guidance for protecting medical Internet of Things (IoT) equipment, according to an article on the SC Media website.

The report, "Securing Wireless Infusion Pumps," contains tips that can help protect IoT devices. The threats include unauthorized access to protected health information (PHI), changes to prescribed drug doses, and interference with function, the report stated.

The NIST publication covers how to secure against a variety of cyberattacks, including those specifically targeted against an infusion pump, APT intrusions, DoS and DDoS and malware, as well as unintentional insider threats.

NIST and the NCCoE recommended healthcare organizations form a medical device security committee composed of staff members from biomedical services, IT, and infosec departments.
