NY health care workers get fire safety training

Fatal fire at Illinois nursing facility puts spotlight on program

Health care workers took on some intense training on long island recently, facing flames and some simulated life or death scenarios, according to an article on the MyFoxNY.com website.

This training came on the heels of a Chicago incident where a man at a nursing home caught on fire because of a lighter in his pocket and died, the article said.

The Nassau County Fire Academy put health care workers in simulated situations using real fire. After a fire safety briefing, participants — including doctors, nurses, and custodians — were taught how to use a fire extinguisher, how to put out a bed fire, and even how to carry a patient out of a smoky room.

"I had no idea that you could put out a waste paper fire in a small bin with a pillowcase or a newspaper," said one student in the article.

Nassau County Fire Marshal Vincent McManus said this training session is particularly important."People that are in healthcare facilities are at a disadvantage because they perhaps cannot rescue themselves or get themselves out of a bad situation so it's critical that staff know what to do in the event of an emergency."
