Naval Medical Center rehabs repair division

The Naval Medical Center in San Diego overhauls aging and inefficient biomedical repair department

The Naval Medical Center (NMCSD) in San Diego overhauled its aging and inefficient biomedical repair department basement space, increasing its productivity and improving turnaround time, according to an article on the Healthcare Construction + Operations website.

NMCSD trains about 70 percent of the U.S. Navy’s military doctors, nurses and corpsmen. The center includes a large teaching hospital, five medical mobilization teams including the hospital ship USNS Mercy and a network of clinics located at area military installations, the article said.

Most of its equipment is maintained and repaired at a shop located in the hospital’s basement. The division needed a space that was clean, well organized and functional.

Four modular workstations are arranged in pods of four benches in an X configuration, which offers 16 seats. Each workstation has lights, storage shelves and drawers and a place for the computer.

Complementing the technicians' stations were three height-adjustable benches for specific computer-related tasks outside the area of the standard bench duties. Technicians of various heights can adjust these benches for optimal ergonomic fit, the article said.
