Navigating new Life Safety codes

Healthcare projects must comply with CMS requirements

Medicare surveyors have been enforcing the 2012 editions of the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Health Care Facilities Code and Life Safety Code since last November, according to an article on the Outpatient Surgery website.

Some things to remember to pass Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) surveys include:

• If you remodel, you must follow the rules for new construction.

•  Maintain records of your initial verification testing on fire alarms, sprinklers, generators and medical gases.

•  Always have a construction project's blueprints on file, including any changes to the plans that have been made
