New N.C. orthopedic clinic includes LED lighting upgrade

Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic switches to adjustable LED lighting for new facility design

The new Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic includes an in-office pharmacy, an MRI, a physical therapy center, an orthopedic urgent care and an orthopedic surgery center. Among the design choices, according to a case study on the Cree website, was transitioning to LED lighting.

Healthcare facilities have some of the most rigorous lighting requirements of any setting. Light quality with precise color rendering supports better patient outcomes by enabling staff to make more accurate skin and wound care assessment.

The Raleigh, N.C., clinic chose LED troffers to provide general illumination throughout the building. The performance and efficiency of the fixtures put a lighter load on the operating budget than traditional fluorescent or incandescent lighting solutions, the article said.

The new facility includes a physical therapy center spanning the length of the facility’s third floor. Using the LED troffers’ dimming capability, the staff is able to adjust the light levels to suit the use of the space.

Higher light levels are used on the side of the therapy center with exercise bikes and weights, while lower levels work well on the other end of the center, where patients often lie on tables as they receive treatment.
