New Springfield surgery center designed for safety, satisfaction

St. John's Hospital Surgery Center has roomier surgical rooms and many patient-friendly amenities

From the spacious sterile processing area to the roomier surgical rooms and many patient-friendly amenities, the new $121 million surgery center at St. John's Hospital has been built to please, according to an article on The State-Journal website.

The surgery center is expected to open by late May or June and $51 million in renovations will be completed by summer on four floors of the 13-story patient-care tower.

The construction project, the largest in the Catholic hospital's 140-year history, is “enhancing every aspect of the patient experience and elevating healthcare to a new standard,” according to the hospital.

The center increases by five-fold the amount of space devoted to non-heart-related surgery at St. John's. The increase is due to the 16 new operating rooms, the wider hallways and the expansion of other areas, such as the sterile processing area.

That processing area cost $7 million to develop and it expands what has been available for cleaning and sanitizing surgical equipment to prevent contamination and hospital-acquired infections.
