New Vancouver hospital brings new design benchmarks to province

St. Mary's is first British Columbia hospital with all single-occupancy rooms

By Healthcare Facilities Today

The newly-completed St. Mary’s Hospital in Vancouver is the only British Columbia hospitals with all single-occupancy inpatient rooms. It is also one of the few hospitals to have operable windows in all clinical and inpatient areas, according to an article on the Daily Commercial News website.

St. Mary’s is also one of the first recent hospitals in the province to have point-of-care stations at each inpatient bedroom, allowing supplies to be loaded on the corridor side of the room and be accessed from within, reducing interruptions to patients.

The new construction phase culminated in the completion of a new lobby that serves as the new face of the hospital, marks the new main entrance and connects the new and existing portions of the hospital, the article said.

Central to the design of the lobby was the creation of a new public room for the community and the inclusion of artwork — such as a mural that welcomes visitors to the hospital and spans the 70-foot-long lobby.THe mural was created by members of the Sechelt Indian Band, who also donated the land for the hospital.
