New ambulance bay built to improve safety and efficiency

Janesville, Wis., hospital's new structure can accommodate five ambulances

The Mercy Health System in Janesville, Wis., recently opened a new, 6,000-square-foot ambulance bay that can accommodate up to five vehicles, according to an article on the WKOW website.

The previous bay — which could only hold two vehicles — often resulted in medics having to park their ambulances outside the bay and transfer patients through inclement weather.

The new bay is U-shaped with dedicated entrance and exit routes. The previous structure required ambulance drivers to drive straight in and then reverse out.

"As a result of being a trauma center, a stroke center and a chest pain center accommodating patients with heart attacks and strokes, our volumes have shot up exponentially which mandated the need for a larger ambulance bay," Dr. Glenn Milos, Mercy Health's Regional Medical Director of Emergency Services, said in the article. "The demand is there and the volume is there as well."
